The North Carolina Higher Education Consortium (NCHEC) is the dedicated collegiate services team at Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC).
NCHEC was established to address critical gaps in substance use prevention and recovery services for college-aged young adults by providing training and technical assistance to alcohol and other drug (AOD) and wellness staff on campuses across North Carolina.
We understand that AOD and wellness staff are dedicated to supporting every student but often face limitations. That’s where NCHEC comes in! We offer hands-on assistance to these committed professionals, boosting their capacity to address the unique needs of their student populations. NCHEC promotes a more comprehensive approach to student health and wellbeing by empowering campus staff.
The consortium is available to serve all 110 institutions of higher education in North Carolina’s 100 counties.
Goal
The Goal of NCHEC is to promote the health and well-being of students by building the capacity of behavioral health students and campus staff within higher education through programming, technical assistance, and advocacy.

We envision a community of thriving students supported by a network of colleges and universities across NC.

- Growth in capacity for prevention professionals on campuses through support of the NC Higher Education Wellness and AOD coalition

APNC
NCHEC is housed within the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC). As the professional trade association for substance use professionals and providers in the state of North Carolina, APNC sits at the nexus of the substance use and mental health industries to provide a collective voice and cohesive message in all matters that affect individuals, providers, and the people they serve.
NCHEC’s positioning at APNC allows us to leverage relationships with key stakeholders, provide education on the issues that matter most to students and staff, and elevate the voices of students and staff on college campuses.

NCTTA
The NC Training and Technical Center, also housed at the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC), supports the SUPTRS-funded prevention system related to workforce development. Their training and technical assistance services include strategy-specific basic and advanced skills-building training and structured technical assistance opportunities offered to individuals and in group settings to address a provider’s programmatic needs and resolve issues with Ecco, our online reporting system.
To strengthen the future workforce in substance use prevention, NCHEC partners with the NCTTA Center to enhance student workforce programs. Our Prevention Fellowship Program is a crucial initiative, providing young professionals with the skills and experience they need to excel in this critical field!
