Open to all NC institutions of higher education, members of the NC Higher Education Wellness Alcohol & Other Drug Coalition (NCHEW), aim to work collaboratively with NC Colleges and Universities to support the health, safety, and academic success of students through comprehensive alcohol and other drug prevention and recovery strategies.

We are committed to providing a dedicated space that fosters professional support, collaboration, and knowledge acquisition for all staff members of NC Higher Education. We believe in the power of collective efforts, and together, we can create a healthier and more resilient campus and community.

The NCHEW Coalition has been around since the early 80s. Originally, ‘The Network’ was funded by the Department of Education along with many other coalition efforts around the country. When that program and money ceased back in the mid-2000’s, the coalition held a strategic planning process for the members, and decided to switch the name to the Campus Community Coalition (to prevent/reduce misuse of alcohol) or C3 for short. This coalition continued for about 4- 5 years before APNC joined as a partner. The C3 members had another planning retreat and decided to change the name to be more descriptive of the statewide level engagement of members, and in an effort to begin positioning ourselves to be a potential advocacy body as needed. That new name is used today, NC Higher Education Wellness and AOD Coalition or NCHEW for short. In 2022, APNC was able to launch NCHEC (NC Higher Education Consortium) to officially serve as paid support staff for the coalition. While the coalition is still its own, stand alone, entity, the NCHEC team assists with administrative tasks, event planning, the creation of resources, and moving the coalition’s action items forward.

Attendance in the coalition is completely FREE for all NC institutions of higher education. Members can expect free peer collaboration and networking calls, technical assistance calls and resources, continuing education credits, access to latest research and resources, collaborative summits, and a network of support.

If your campus is interested in joining, don’t hesitate to reach out to the team at NCHEC@apnc.org or book a meeting through this link
