Our Origins and Evolution
Originally known as “The Network,” a coalition funded by the Department of Education, NCHEW’s history dates back to the early 1980s. After the funding ended in the mid-2000s, the coalition rebranded as the Campus Community Coalition (C3), focusing on reducing alcohol misuse on college campuses. As the coalition continued to grow and evolve, it undertook a strategic planning process, leading to its current identity as the NC Higher Education Wellness and Alcohol & Other Drug Coalition (NCHEW). This name reflects the expanded statewide reach and ongoing commitment to student wellness and advocacy.
The Role of NCHEC in Supporting NCHEW
In 2022, the North Carolina Higher Education Consortium (NCHEC) was formed to provide dedicated administrative support to NCHEW. NCHEC assists with event planning, resource creation, and day-to-day operations, allowing NCHEW to stay focused on its mission of promoting student health and safety. While NCHEC supports coalition efforts, NCHEW remains an independent entity, continuing to lead initiatives that foster wellness across North Carolina’s higher education institutions.
