At NCHEC, we’re dedicated to empowering alcohol and other drug, and wellness professionals on college and university campuses. That said, we know this important work is not their work alone – these challenges require a collective effort. Therefore, we have produced a series of comprehensive reports that not only guide alcohol and other drug professionals in addressing substance misuse but also outline how the entire campus community can contribute to these efforts. Please see below for electronic copies of these reports. If your team is interested in ordering printed versions, please email nchec@apnc.org.
Substance Use Prevention On North Carolina Campuses – September 2023:
Substance use among college-aged students persists as a significant behavioral health and well-being challenge, despite national efforts. In addition, we’ve seen campuses identify gaps and challenges to their student support, including staff shortages and burnout, high staff turnover rates, inadequate resources, and a pressing need for enhanced collaboration. APNC conducted a statewide needs assessment for our campus wellness staff in 2022. Following this assessment, the collegiate team met with key stakeholders for interviews and gathered feedback from NC’s statewide collegiate wellness coalition to create a set of strategic prevention recommendations. This report outlines both the findings of the assessment and the recommendations.
Campus-Community Coalitions
College students do not exist solely on their campuses. They are working, socializing, and participating in their communities as well! Connection, collaboration, and engagement are all at the core of our prevention work. With this in mind, APNC understands the importance of campuses and communities partnering together to create safer and healthier environments for our college students. Based on foundational principles of coalition building, SAMHSA’s best practices, and suggestions from the International Town and Gown Association, we are excited to share a set of short and easy-to-implement recommendations for existing community coalitions and collegiate behavioral health staff to connect, collaborate, and engage with each other!
ACHA NCHA
In the Fall of 2024, APNC was able to provide funding to campus partners to implement the American College Health Association’s National College Health Assessment. Participating campuses allowed their data to be collated to create the state’s first baseline. At the heart of effective prevention lies accurate data, and the NCHEC team was honored to support campus partners every step of the way through this program. Coming Winter 2024.
